Unit 302 · Electrical Science · LO2
◧ Exam question  [ 4 marks ]
Explain the relationship between power factor, kW and kVA for an inductive load, and state one method used to improve a poor power factor.
Power factor is the ratio of true power to apparent power. A low power factor means you draw more current than needed for the load. You can improve it by adding capacitors in parallel.
✓ Meets the standard — 4/4 marks
Model answer: Power factor (pf = cosφ = P/S) is the ratio of real power (kW) to apparent power (kVA). An inductive load causes a lagging current, giving a pf below 1. The fix — power factor correction — typically uses capacitor banks wired in parallel to counteract the inductive reactive power (kVAr), reducing the kVA demand and current drawn.

The full toolkit

Everything you need, in the order you'll use it

Level 3 written papers are marked on depth, not keywords — so the core of Ohmwork is real marking and real teaching. Several tools are completely free.

Study Buddy Free

Adaptive question practice that doubles as your diagnostic — it shows where you stand across every unit, ramps difficulty with your streak, and a focus mode drills your weakest topics. Build combos and climb the voltage ladder.

Interactive lessons

Bite-size teach-then-check lessons (L1–L3 + 2391), grounded in the course textbooks. Get one wrong and it reshuffles and re-teaches — no guessing through.

Written questions, properly marked

AI marks your written — or photographed — answer against the real assessment criteria, shows what you missed, and gives a mini-lesson, then a fresh question until it sticks.

Timed mocks

Multiple-choice mocks that mirror the real e-volve tests — right question count, pass mark and timing for each unit. Your first mock on each level is free; extras are a couple of braincells.

Weak-topics sheet Free

A printable list of the exact topics to revise, built from your Study Buddy and practice history — your revision plan to take into the exam.

Formulas & progress

Every formula with live calculators, plus a dashboard tracking mastery per unit and a revision sheet of your weak spots.

Questions

FAQ

Is this the real City & Guilds past paper?

No. C&G past papers are copyrighted and we don't reproduce them. These are realistic exam-style practice questions written in the same style as the real assessment, covering the same learning outcomes — designed to prepare you, not to copy the actual paper.

How accurate is the AI marking?

The AI is grounded in the official 2365-03 qualification handbook and BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition, Amendment 4:2026). It marks against criterion-referenced Level 3 standards and corrects wrong facts rather than crediting them. It is very good — but not a qualified assessor. Use it to identify gaps; your college assessor has the final word.

What are braincells exactly?

Braincells are your credit. Study Buddy, a few taster lessons and your first mock on each level are free; braincells are spent to unlock the rest of the lessons (1 braincell each, 63p), to AI-mark your written or photo answers (~25p each) and for extra mocks (2 braincells, £1.25 each). Pricing is flat — every pack is the same rate. The whole of Level 3 works out around £29, and most learners spend £10–50 across a level, with no subscription or expiry.

Does my progress save if I close the browser?

Yes — when you're signed in, your progress saves to your account automatically and syncs across every device. Just log back in (with email or Google) and it's all there.

Which units are covered?

The full City & Guilds 2365-03 Level 3: 301 Environmental Technology, 302 Electrical Science, 303 Fault Diagnosis, 304 Inspection & Testing and 305 Systems Design — with interactive lessons, AI written practice and timed mocks. Unit 308 (Career Awareness) has a lesson but is assignment-assessed, so no exam practice. There are also interactive lessons and free Study Buddy practice for Level 1, Level 2 and the 2391 Inspection & Testing qualification.

Is my data safe?

Your password is stored hashed (PBKDF2) — never in readable form. Connections use HTTPS only. We store your email, username and study progress — that's it. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.

Can I get a refund?

Unused braincells can be refunded within 14 days of purchase. Once braincells have been spent (on unlocking a lesson or AI marking), that portion is non-refundable. See the Terms of Service.
